Gray Duck Theater
Gray Duck Theater began in the winter of 2017 when Andy started to research how he could bring the film culture he missed in LA to his new home in the Midwest. After research and through a lot of hard work by many good people, the idea of a mirco-cinema in Rochester became a reality. Gray Duck Theater was born.
Our vision focuses on three things. First, we are a uniquely local cinema. We are inspired by Southeast Minnesota’s people and their products, and we’ll incorporate and celebrate them as much as possible, down to the beer, wine, snacks, and artwork. From the moment you enter the theater, we want to offer you an experience that reflects Southeastern Minnesota. Gray Duck Theater is for you.
Second, we want to facilitate conversation. Our lobby will look more like a coffee shop than a cineplex, and we invite you to stay and talk with us or others about the film you just experienced. You don’t have to use your car for post-movie discussion anymore! We also will routinely host non-profit fundraisers, Q and A sessions with filmmakers, movie trivia nights, as well as other special events to spark these conversations.
Third, flowing from these conversations, we hope to be the foundation for a vibrant and accepting film community in Rochester. Not only are we hosting a ton of great events we think you’ll love, but from launch we’ll be offering what we call the Flying V Club. For $20 dollars a month, you receive unlimited trips to the theater, as well as access to special promotions and giveaways. You can purchase a membership for our first year through our Indiegogo campaign.
Andy’s love of cinema can be traced back to his formative years growing up in the Los Angeles area. He was brought to the snowy North by his beautiful and talented wife Anna, a Minnesota native. When not watching movies, Andy enjoys watching/playing soccer, board games, reading, and listening to too many podcasts. His favorite film is Lord of the Rings; and yes, he means the extended editions.
Jake is originally from the Twin Cities area. Some of Jake's interests include gaming, playing/watching sports, listening to a smorgasbord of podcasts and scheming about his next PC build. He's not sure what his favorite movie is, but he thinks highly of Batman Begins, Groundhog Day, and Space Jam. That last one is a joke. Sort of.
